Using curtain or a blind is an essential part of an interior decorating process, but the right style can be elusive sometimes. In this article let us throw some light on creative ideas with curtain in interiors.
When selecting a style of curtains or blinds it is the room interior, the particular style and proportion of the openings with its surrounding can become a restraining element or a good guideline, if this is handled properly and professionally it can be a starting as well as guiding point of an exclusive window treatment.
If in interior it is a wood frame window then it is advisable that the curtain arrangement should be within the wood frame vertically, but if one is living on lower floors or if the requirement of light is more then the available curtain arrangement can be beyond the window.
Sometimes the proportion of the window in interior is odd or out of scale so to balance it one can have curtain arrangement beyond the window frames.
Now a days interiors of apartments have small and recessed windows, it is more logical to fix curtain arrangement outside the recess, this arrangement will admit maximum light in the room and also not obstruct the window with too much of fabric, if the window is narrow and long with excessive walls on the sides then it is advisable to have single curtain instead of conventional paired curtains. This single curtain system is best suited for an interior with French type window / door as it is more practical, as it would allow the shutter to open fully and properly.
Where to stop the curtains in terms of length? This is a decision that leaves many people completely puzzled. Well if there is an air-conditioner below then what? What if the window sill is too high and window small? Or the wall around the window is too big? Well there is a golden rule that can help in this situation; the curtain should be up to the floor level (just 4 short of the floor). This long curtain will balance the interior. Full sized curtains in interior also acts advantageous for the room as it would help to block excessive heat radiation from either side, in to out or out to in.
Broad and tall windows are always a problem in an interior as it leaves hardly any place for other elements of aesthetic add-ons. So one tends to overdo the window with different types of curtains like swag valance, sheer, American pleated etc. without thinking about the maintenance part.
In my 20 years of practice as an Architect Interior designer I have never seen swag valance curtain maintained properly. It is actually not advisable to have this type of curtains; instead one can have dual curtains one sheer and other proper fabric one. To give a good backdrop to the interior of a room sheer can be drawn and the other can be held back with thick tieback.
